Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage, and forms the foundation for other Western Massage styles such as Sports Massage and Deep Tissue Massage.
Developed by Swedish physiologist Per Henrik Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812, Swedish massage is used primarily for its relaxation benefits by applying firm and gentle pressure over the whole body.
Swedish massage is used when the psychological effects are desired more than the physical ones. However it does also provide various benefits for the muscular, nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems by easing muscle aches and tension, increasing circulation and flexibility, and promoting a feeling of well-being and relaxation.
